Chinese Herbal Prescription for A H1N1 Influenza

A packet of Chinese Herbal Prescription for countering the A H1N1 Flu

*

Happy Saturday, dear friends :D

A month or so ago, I have been receiving through emails and my cell phone a Chinese Formula/Prescription for a herbal tea to stave off the Influenza A H1N1.  For my family, I have been brewing Ng Far Char or “Five Flower Tea” (read my earlier post on this HERE) to reduce body heatiness, which in Traditional Chinese Medicine is  believed to be the root cause for weak body immunity and susceptibility to any flu virus.

Recently, I saw these herbs for the AH1N1 prescription prepacked for  sale at my regular Chinese Medical Hall (shop) – it costs only RM10 for each packet. I bought some to try for my family. Seeing as how the rate of deaths arising from the A H1N1 flu in China is so low given its large population, I was convinced that this herbal formula must be working well to build up our body immunity.

I thought to post this Chinese formula here for those of you who live abroad and you have access to your local Chinatowns…hope that you get the herbs shown in the formula.

How to prepare the herbs -

1) Just bring to boil the herbs in 3 litres of water, lower heat to small and simmer for 2 hours.

2) Remove herbs with a slotted spoon and add in red or brown or white sugar according to taste.

3) Drink one cup or two  per person per day. Keep any left over refrigerated.

Important Note :- If you are on Western medication, please keep 3 hours apart between consuming this herbal drink and taking your medication (to prevent contra-indications/clash)

With best wishes,

Easy Homemade Dragon Fruit Health Enzyme For Drinking & My Review Of This Enzyme

Picture 046 (Small)
Two bottles of Dragon Fruit Enzymes and a bowl of Dragon Fruit “Jam”

Picture 047 (Small)

A small cup consisting of 2 to 3 tablespoons of Dragon Fruit Enzyme, mixed with water.

To be had first thing in the morning, on an empty stomach for better absorption.

(Please read the comments below for feedback on my family’s health after we started drinking this)

*

Good evening, dear friends :D

Ah, finally…. I am posting my recipe for making enzymes for drinking. All thanks go to my blog visitor, Jessica, who so graciously shared with me her recipe for making drinking enzymes at Comment # 14 at my cleaning enzyme post HERE .

I did some reading over the Internet to find out more on drinking enzymes .

Some links with good information, recipes and tips on fruit enzymes :-

1) here,  from e-How

2) here, from Leah’s Cafe

3) here, from Penang-Island

4) here, from Cooking Momster - this site has some background on a Chinese recipe for fruit enzymes using “San Cha” used to make Haw Flakes. There are some interesting recipes there as well as the benefits of the various fruit enzymes.

Different sites have different information on the recipes – like how much fruit in proportion to sugar/honey, when to shake the enzyme during fermentation, how long to wait before harvesting enzyme (period ranges from 2 weeks to 6 months), and how to take the fruit enzyme for health.  So, I would suggest that you gather as much information as you like on the Internet before you start making your own enzymes.

In general, it was reported that drinking fruit enzymes improves our vitality, ensures regularity in our bowel system, aids in digestion and enhances body absorption of nutrtients.

Initially, I was going to buy a large glass jar to prepare the enzyme in, but at the last minute, I decided that I would just use the inner pot of my slow cooker  - the reason being, I didn’t know how much of liquid enzyme would be yielded and I wanted to get the size of the jar right.

Picture 031 (Small)I had used my crockpot to prepare the enzyme. My fruits all layered with the last topping being lemon and sugar. After that, I poured in 1 cup of apple cider and 1 cup of Australian honey

Picture 044 (Small)

I covered my crockpot with the glass lid and a piece of aluminium to keep out the light. Beside it is a new glass jar that I had bought to prepare more Fruit Enzyme the next time.

Some tips to share with you :-

  1. make sure that the fruits, chopping board and knives are completely dry as even a drop of water can spoil the enzyme. I washed them thoroughly and left them to dry overnight. But, if you are rushed for time or you find that your items are not 100% dry, do like what Jessica does – she uses a hairdryer!
  2. as you cut your fruits, it is best to place them straight in the jar – this is to ensure that the fruits are not contaminated or exposed to fruit flies
  3. you have to use a glass jar for safety reasons because we are going to drink this enzyme.  If plastic bottles are used instead, it is feared that the fermentation process may leech out some unhealthy stuff used to make the plastic bottles
  4. the fruit enzyme needs a dark, cool place to ferment. You can also wrap a piece of aluminium foil or an old t-shirt or cloth around the glass jar
  5. shake or stir the fruits often to prevent build-up of a whitish mould at the surface. Don’t worry, the mould is safe and is a sign that fermentation is well underway.
  6. if black spots or black moulds are seen, it would mean that the fruit enzyme is contaminated. Some people recommended that the black moulds be scooped out and the fruits left to ferment further. For me, I would prefer to throw the whole batch away and start a new one, for fear of food poisoning  from the contamination.
  7. upon harvest, pour the liquid enzyme into old, clean wine bottles. The leftover fruit can be used as jams, or it can be fermented further to be used as a facial wash or plant fertiliser. I gave half of my fermented fruit to a friend, and the other one is kept in the fridge to eat as a jam with my toasts.

Picture 032 (Small)

This is my one day old Fruit Enzyme

Because 2 of my dragon fruits were over-ripe and there were some worms inside (I am terrified of worms  ), I had a paranoia that my other fruits may have eggs that will turn into worms! So, I decided at the last step of the preparation to add 1 cup of apple cider (I thought that should kill anything inside and of course, I had thrown away the worm infested fruits!) and for added fragrance and to cut down the sugar level, I replaced one cup of sugar with Australian honey.

I had read that the apple cider will speed up the fermentation process, and that was also another reason that I added the apple cider.

Picture 034This is after a week – there is more liquid produced and there is some white bubbles on the surface – a sign of fermentation in progress

Picture 045 (Small)

My Dragon Fruit Enzyme ready to be harvested – 2 weeks after preparation :D

My Dragon Fruit Recipe

3 kilos or 6 1/2 pounds of Pink Dragon Fruit

8 lemons

1 kilo or 1 3/4 pounds slabs of brown sugar (or loose brown sugar)

1 cup apple cider

1 cup honey

*

Method

Remove skins and cut to slices about 1 cm or 1/2 inch thick

Arrange dragon fruit starting at the bottom, alternating with slices of lemon and sugar

The last layer at the top must be sugar

Pour apple cider and honey over everything

Cover and keep for 2 weeks, shaking gently the contents in the first few days, and stirring thereafter occasionally

*

The fruit enzyme was harvested exactly 2 weeks after preparation and there was just enough to fill 2 wine bottles. Half a bottle was consumed immediately for a few days, while the rest will be left for a further duration until 4 to 6 months, with a taste test at every 2 weeks.

In a few days, my enzyme will be exactly 1 month old, and I will see how the taste goes.  A website had mentioned that the ph of the enzyme improves over time, especially after 4 months. I’m not sure exactly what that meant and I just assume that the enzyme will not be so acidic after a longer period. I guess it is like wine, which tastes better over time!

Also, new enzymes are more alcoholic in nature and some websites do not recommend that the enzyme be consumed at this stage because the alcohol is not good on the liver. My opinion is the new enzyme should be fine for consumption as we are not drinking large amounts of it enough to damage our liver. We are just having 2 to 3 tablespoons a day as a tonic for our health.

The 2-week old fruit enzyme tasted like a mild apple cider mixed with alcohol, with a hint of apple cider and honey. My children hated the taste of it and I had to tell them to pretend that it was Ribena! Anyway, they never liked apple cider either!

It is best to drink the enzyme first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, rest for half an hour before taking breakfast. I mixed the enzyme with  2 times its amount of room temperature water. For me and my second daughter, the dragon fruit enzyme tasted absolutely delicious – like a fruity wine! It didn’t smell bad or rotten at all as I had thought it to be.

The period that we consumed the dragon fruit enzyme (5 days all in) was too short to notice any significant improvement in our vitality and health. But all of us reported easier and better bowel movements, as if the enzyme is removing toxins faster from our bodies. Another reason why I stopped drinking the enzymes after 5 days was because I developed a mild food poisoning from eating some bad curry at a mamak shop. My husband and second daughter continued to take until 1 week and they didn’t report and adverse side effects in their health.

In summary, I would definitely recommend to everyone that they should try to make some fruit enzymes to drink. I think the enzymes will do more good than harm. I have seen some stalls at the TTDI pasar (markets) selling the homemade dragon fruit enzyme for RM39 (USD10) for a 750ml bottle. My cost was only half of that and by making my own enzyme, I can be sure that I use good quality fruits and there is hygiene in preparing them.

My next post will be how to make our own rice enzyme for washing dishes. A friend gave me a bottle to try and it is really effective in cutting grease!

Do have a lovely week ahead!

With best wishes for good health,

H1N1 Flu Protection? Try “Ng Far Cha” or “5-Flower Tea” To Boost Your Immunity

Ng Far Cha or 5 Flower Tea 001 (Small)Ng Far Cha or 5-Flower Tea

Ng Far Cha or 5 Flower Tea 002 (Small)A A glass of cold “5 Flower Tea”

(Read HERE for a Chinese  Prescription Formula to get the herbs to brew a tea specifically to boost body immunity agains the A H1N1 Flu pandemic)

*

Hi there, dear friends :D

I am always on the lookout on natural home remedies for good healh and last week, I overheard a few ladies talking about the Influenza A Type H1N1 and what they are doing from the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) perspective to boost body immunity.  I joined in their conversation and learned that they are brewing a type of tea using dried flowers, known as “Gold and Silver Flowers” (translated literally from Cantonese as “Kum Ngan Far.”)

So, I quickly went to my regular Chinese medical hall and told the boss there what I had learned from those ladies. He said according to  TCM, it is very easy to catch a flu, sore throat and fever when our body is experiencing heatiness (especially “fire” in Chinese terms). As long as we can balance our body’s yin (cold) and yang (hot) carefully at all times, we can lessen the chances of catching any flu because our body immunity is stronger.

Instead of using just the “Gold & Silver Flowers”, he recommended instead the “5-Flower Tea” or “Ng Far Cha” in Cantonese. In his prescription of this tea, it has Dried Chrysanthemum Flowers and 2 other types of Flowers (I forgot the names  )  in addition to the Gold & Silver Flowers. This tea will work even better in dispelling body heatiness and dampness, and especially heatiness in the colon (which is caused by irregular bowel movements and toxins are absorbed into the body).

To brew this tea – I bought 2 packets (RM5 each) Ng Far Cha and boiled the herbs in large pot of water (about 6 to 7 litres) for 2 hours. Remove the flowers and add “red sugar” (Hoong Tong or Gula Merah) or brown sugar to taste. The red sugar has anti-inflammatory properties.

Store the tea in bottles and drink some everyday. They can be kept refrigerated up to 1 week.

Do get some Ng Far Cha and make this for your family to drink, especially now that we are experiencing the hot weather and with the H1N1 and Dengue Fever going around, it is best to keep our body “cool” internally.  This cooling tea are sold at “leong char” or “cooling herbal tea” stalls and shops in town and you can buy from there if you don’t have the time to brew it.

Actually, I wanted to sell herbs and teas like this for health at my Happyhomemaker88’s Webstore but couldn’t because, I found out that for some countries (especially in US), their Customs are really strict and they forbid any mailing of herbs and medicine.

With best wishes for good health,

Sweet Version Of Lung Cleansing Watercress Soup – Good For Smokers, Halitosis (Bad Breath), Soothing Body Heatiness & Coughs

Hi there, dear friends :D

Earlier I had written about the wonderful health benefits of the watercress soup for cleansing our lungs. This post can be read HERE .

All this while, I have always cooked a savoury version of watercress soup, using either pork or chicken…but today, I decided to do a sweet version. My healer friend had mentioned before that the sweet version tastes even better when it is drank cold after it is refrigerated.

Watercress Soup 001 (Small)Freshly cleaned Watercress

*

Below is a picture of my large pot of watercress soup – the ingredients were :-

  • 1 kg watercress, cleaned and use stems and all
  • 400 gm of preserved honey dates or “mutt joe”
  • about 4 litres of water or enough water to fill a large pot

Method – Bring all ingredients to a boil, lower fire and simmer for 4 hours.

Watercress Sweet Soup 002 (Small)

A

A mug of delicious, rich coloured, sweet watercress soup.

Just strain off the soup and store it in bottles in the refrigerator. It can be kept for 2 to 3 days, and each of my family member will have at least one cup of this healthy soup each day.

Among the Chinese, the watercress soup is traditionally known to be good for our lungs but it was from my healer friend that I learnt the watercress soup, be it savoury or sweet, has the following health benefits  :-

1) it is really effective for detoxifying our lungs of impurities. Smokers and people who live in a polluted environment will benefit greatly from drinking this soup.

2) in TCM, bad breath or halitosis is believed to be caused by heatiness of the lungs, and this soup will cure that. My healer friend was approached one day for a natural remedy by a lady whose husband was having bad breath. He drank the watercress soup over 2 days and his bad breath was gone completely.

3) a soothing remedy for body heatiness, especially during the hot and dry weather.

4) also a good remedy for soothing the lungs from coughs

A word of caution – although I love the taste of watercress soup, my youngest son said it smells terrible. So, you be the judge, okay?

With best wishes for good health,

Nourishing Soup For A Hot, Hazy Weather

fruity-drink-to-cure-dry-or-phlegmy-coughs-and-soothe-lungs-002-smallWinter Melon

*

Chinese BarleyChChinese Barley

*

Good morning, dear friends Very Happy

These few weeks, the weather has been very hazy  and extremely hot in Kuala lumpur. This situation brought to my mind this recipe given to me by my healer friend in year 2005  when we experienced the worst haze ever, when schools and offices had to be closed in the Klang Valley.

During that time, the symptoms that we had were “foggy” brains/mind (we can’t seem to think well, hehe – maybe from not enough oxygen to the brain?), forgetfulness, body heatiness and lethargy/no energy.

She gave me me this recipe which was handed down by her grandmother (so, it must be a 100-years old recipe, as the healer is in her 50’s) but she spoke to me in Cantonese, so I’ll try my best to translate here.

Ingredients  :-

  • Cleaned flesh from 1 small wintermelon
  • 1  cup (or RM 1 mixed Chinese barley (“sang sook yee mai” in Cantonese), or normal barley
  • 1/2 cup dried mandarin orange peel (homemade or buy from Chinese Medical Hall)
  • 1/2 kg pork spare ribs (or pork lean meat)
  • 4 litres water

Method – Bring all ingredients to a boil,  lower heat to small and simmer  for 3 hours. Add seasoning to taste. You can serve this nutritious soup with your dinner.

This soup helps to clear our body systems from the pollutants and dry heat in the weather. Personally, I added 1 cup of red dates for fragrance. Now that the haze is back, I will go to the farmer’s market (pasar malam) this evening to buy the ingredients and my family will be having this soup tomorrow.
Very Happy

With best wishes for good health,

Using Breathing Techniques For Self Healing – Headaches, Migraines, Tiredness

Good afternoon, dear friends :D

I received this interesting email (quoted below the picture) on using the breathing through our respective nostrils to heal certain aspects of our lives.  As always, I am interested in natural remedies for health and thought you may be interested in this form of healing. This technique is known in Yoga as “Pranayama.”

The connection that the breath has to our physical, emotional, and spiritual health has been well recognized by healing traditions of both East and West.  In Chinese, the character    (Qì), is used to represent both the vital energetic force which sustains all living beings as well as the breath itself. In both Chinese and Indian systems of self-healing, the breath and vital force are said to move together; they are inseparable.  Many techniques of manipulating the breath have been devised to support physical health, establish a balanced and well-adjusted emotional temperament, and assist with spiritual growth.

The picture below suggests that we open the four fingers while pressing on one nostril with our thumb. However, most yoga instrutors would teach us to curl our index and middle fingers into our palm, let our ring finger and pinkie relax, and have our thumb pressing close one nostril. Try both techniques to see which is more suitable for you…

breathing-techniques

Our noses have left and right nostrils. Are these nostrils having the same function for inhaling (breathe in) and exhaling (breathe out)?
Actually it’s not the same and we can feel the difference. Accordingly, the right side represents the sun and the left side represents the moon.
When having headache, try to close your right nostril and use your left nostril to do breathing for about 5 min. The headache will be gone.
If you feel too tired, do it the opposite way. Close your left nostril and breathe through your right nostril. After a while, you will feel refresh again.
Because the right side belongs to heat, so it gets hot easily. The left side gets cold easily.
Women breathe mainly with their left nostril, so they get calm down easily.
Men breathe mostly with their right nostril, so they get angry easily.!
When we wake up, do we notice which nostril breathes faster? Is it the left side or the right side?
If the left nostril breathes faster, you will feel very tired. Close your left nostril and use your right nostril for breathing and you will get refresh quickly.
You can teach your kids about it. The effect of breathing therapy is much better for adults.
I used to have painful headache. When consulted a doctor, he told me jokingly,” You will be all right if you get married!” The doctor did not bullshit me as he had his theory and supported with testimony.
During that time, I used to have headache every night and I was not able to study. I took medicine but I was not cured.
One night as I sat down to medidate, I closed my right nostril and breathed with my left nostril. In less than a week, it seemed that my headache problem had left me! I continued doing it for about a month and since then there was no recurrence of head! ache in me. This is my own experienc! e. I used to tell others who also suffer headache to try this method as it was effective for me. It also works for those who have tried as well. This is a natural therapy, unlike taking medicines for a long time may have side effect. So, why don’t you try it out?
Practice the correct ways of breathing (breathe in and breathe out) and your body will be in a very relaxing condition

A Fruity Drink To Soothe Dry Or Phlegmy Coughs & Body Heatiness

Good evening, dear friends :D

The weather in Malaysia has taken a turn to hot and humid, almost like a heatwave. Everyone I know is complaining about it. Just a few weeks ago, we were experiencing almost daily thunderstorms and the weather was cool and enjoyable.

The sudden switch to this very hot weather can cause our body to become heaty, resulting in either dry our phlegmy coughs. This fruity drink recipe was taught to me by my healer friend, Yoong Cheh…it is really soothing and balances the heatiness in our body.

Ingredients -

fruity-drink-to-cure-dry-or-phlegmy-coughs-and-soothe-lungs-001-small

Clockwise from top – Dried Mandarin Oranges, 2 Buddha’s Fruit (Lor Hon Kor), 1 cup Dried Figs, 1 cup Pak Cheok (optional), 1 cup Chinese Almonds

*

fruity-drink-to-cure-dry-or-phlegmy-coughs-and-soothe-lungs-002-small

A packet of Red Sugar and a small wintermelon

*

Method -

fruity-drink-to-cure-dry-or-phlegmy-coughs-and-soothe-lungs-003-small

1) Peel wintermelon, remove seeds and cut into chunks

2) Put wintermelon together with the plate of ingredients shown in the first picture into a large pot containing about 5 litres of water.

3) Bring to a boil, reduce heat to small and simmer the fruity drink for 1 1/2 to 2 hours. …it will look like this ===>

fruity-drink-to-cure-dry-or-phlegmy-coughs-and-soothe-lungs-004-small

4) Check taste for sweetness and if it is not sweet enough for you, you can adjust the taste by adding the red sugar. For my family, I didn’t use any red sugar at all. It was sweet enough.  Red sugar has good anti-inflammatory properties and is good for curing infections of cells in our body, sore throats, and heatiness.

Get everyone in the family to drink at least 2 cups for the first day. The extra fruity drink can be stored in bottles and refrigerated…it tastes very good and refreshing when cold. Subsequent days, drink 1 cup daily.

Have a wonderful week ahead!

With best wishes for good health,

Oh no…I have a large stone detected in my gall bladder! I’m trying out a natural remedy to remove the gallstones…

Home remedy for removing gallstones prescribed by Dr Lai Chiu-Nan

(Please read the comments below for my detailed experience and outcome of trying out Dr. Lai’s method)

*

Good afternoon, dear friends :D

Last night, I suddenly had severe gastric pains and my husband had to take me to the hospital. After some examinations and an ultrasound scan, it was confirmed that I have a large gall stone in my gall bladder – it is 2.2 cm or 2/3 inch long.

After further consultations with the gastro surgeon, I was told to go for surgery to remove my gall bladder. He said this was the only solution as the gall stone is too big. I have never liked the idea of surgery and my only times spent overnight at the hospital were when I delivered my four children.

Nevertheless, this sudden development in my health has got me really all shaken up and I am really terrified of this surgery. My husband and I have yet to set a date for this proposed surgery as we want to find out more information on gall stones and the repercussions of have my gall bladder removed.

We did asked the surgeon what will happen to me when I don’t have a gall bladder…he didn’t give a satisfying reply and we are now under the impression that he just wants to make some money out of this surgery.

In a short while, I am going back to the hospital (it is a private hospital) to have a gastro scope done of my stomach…the surgeon wanted to be sure that my stomach is ulcer free and check for some bacteria there.

In the meantime, I have spoken to a few people – Master atan, my healer friends Yoong Cheh and Chimmal – and thus far, they have all suggested that I delay the surgery to remove my gall stone first and in the meantime, I can follow some proven natural remedies to get rid of my gallstones. They have some friends who had carried the natural remedies successfully….

So, I am going to try this Natural Remedy of Removing Gallstones for about 3 rounds (I was told the second round is even better in getting rid of gall stones)……hope you can wish me luck and success in doing this and I don’t have to go for surgery.

I will keep you posted of my gallstone elimination development following the Natural Method here and if it works (no, I should stay positive and tell myself “IT WILL WORK”), you would know this is indeed a good and effective way of removing gall stones.

I have copied my earlier post of this natural remedy of removing gall stones here for your easy reference…it uses Apple Juice (can add fresh apples also), Epsom Salt and Olive Oil..

apples1.jpg

Good afternoon, dear friends :D

Yesterday, Master atan, a retired healer and fengshui Master, posted at his Dhealing forum HERE a way of removing gallstones that is safe, natural and tested – without going for any surgery. I was very impressed by this method and thought I would share it here with you as I’m sure many people will benefit from this technique.

Master atan said that gall bladder stones today can be easily removed by operation and the so called laparoscopy, a process using laser to remove the gall bladder stones. But there are still ways we can take other than to undergo these expensive treatments, surgeries and medicines to help you cured of gall stones.

Master atan had tried this method himself and has recommended it to many people to follow, advising that this is good and safe.

REMOVING GALLSTONES NATURALLY by Dr Lai Chiu-Nan -

Gallstones may not be everyone’s concern but may lead to cancer. We all have them (big or small, many or few). “Cancer is never the 1st illness. There are a lot of other problems leading to cancer. I came across some materials stating that people with cancer usually had stones,” said Dr Lai of  China.

One symptom of gallstones is a feeling of bloatedness after a heavy meal as if you can’t digest the food. If it gets more serious, you feel pain in the liver area.”

Dr Lai offers the apple juice treatment which is good for those with a weak liver. Liver and gallbladder are closely linked.

1) Drink 1 glass (250ml) 100% apple juice 4 times a day for 5 days. 1 glass at breakfast, 1 glass at lunch, 1 glass at dinner & 1 glass before going to bed. It softens the gallstones. Eat normally.

2) On the 6th day, skip dinner. At 6pm, take a teaspoon of Epsom salt (magnesium sulphate) with a glass of warm water. At 8 PM, repeat the same for purging purpose. It helps to flush out all solid stuff. It also opens the gallbladder ducts. At 10 PM, drink half a glass of olive oil mixed with half a glass of lemon juice. The oil lubricates the stones to ease their passage. Lemon juice helps to extract the stones out from gallbladder ducts.

Soon you will purge again. This time you can find greenish stuff floating in your toilet bowl, if you have gallstones. “You may want to count them. I have had people who passed out 40, 50 or up to 100 stones.” as told by Dr Lee. “Even if you don’t have any symptoms of gallstones, you still might have some. It’s always good to give your gall bladder a clean-up every now and then.”

Something more to share by Master atan -

“Dr Lai Chiu Nan’s “6 Days Apple Juice Treatment” works wonderfully to remove gallstones in a natural way. I came to know this more than 10 years ago and many of my friends had benefited from this treatment without going for operation.

Mr AT almost had his gallbladder operated in the hospital in 1996. When we met up just a few days before his operation appointment, he gave it a try when I told him about this apple juice treatment. The doctor was surprised of the disappearance of gallstones when Mr AT went to the hospital for a re-examination. He passed on this good news to his friends and relatives so much so that whenever a person wanted to buy Epsom salt from the pharmacy in that town, straight away the sales personnel at the pharmacy knew that it’s for the removal of gallstones treatment.

Mr LMK also drank the apple juice and passed out the gallstones. Mr AY called me and asked for the apple juice treatment for his Indonesian worker who refused to go for operation. According to Mr AY, his worker suffered great pain and could hardly walk. One week later, Alan called again saying that his worker still suffered the pain. I told him to bring his worker to see Mr LMK who could give a testimonial to him so that he would repeat the 6 Days treatment one more time. Later I received good news from Mr AY that his worker was able to walk without pain after passing out the gallstones. No operation was required. Mr LMK also told me that the worker thanked him many times whenever they met each other in town for the encouragement and confidence given to him.”

Master atan said that in order for it to be more effective, drink green apple juice. You can buy 100% pure apple juice from supermarket in 2 liters packing. The treatment needs 6 liters only (4 x 250ml = 1 liter per day). Nevertheless, do include apple juice as one of your daily drinks. It’s good for you, he said.

There you have it – a really safe and natural way of removing any gallstones. I’m going to try this out to see for myself and then get my husband to do it also. A word of caution though, I believe we should be aware of the high sugar content of consuming so much apple juice over the 6 days and it is best to cut off all other sources of sugar intake during this treatment period. Also, since it is spanned over 6 days and we are expected to purge a few times on the 6th day, it is best to start this treatment on a Monday or Tuesday…leaving the weekend free to be spending more time in the toilet.

I wish you all good health always,

Homemade, Healthy, Detoxifying Herbal Drink – Misai Kucing (“Cat’s Whiskers”)

Good morning, dear friends :D

No, I am not boiling real cats’ whiskers for a healthy drink  … but a type of plant known as “Misai Kucing” in the Malay language (translated as “Cat Whiskers”) because the sprays of white flowers look like a cat’s whiskers!

The scientific name for this plant is “Orthosiphon Aristatus” and it is a common ornamental plant or garden herb in Malaysia. I was first introduced to Misai Kucing more than 10 years ago when my husband’s elderly aunty told me to brew its leaves as a health drink to treat his gout problem.

(**Add on 14 Sept, 2009READ HERE for an article in our local newspaper recently on “Misai Kucing Cures All” , and the lady talked about the A H1N1 Flu and breast cancer.)

In addition to treating gout (it removes urea acid), the active compound of Misai Kucing is also good for -

  1. diabetes by balancing blood sugar levels
  2. stress
  3. high blood pressure
  4. removing toxins
  5. revitalise our energy
  6. regeneration and building of new cells
  7. balancing our body systems

Seeing the real benefits of this plant, I then quickly harvested some Misai Kucing from my garden and made a large pot of health drink for my family. As I had some other Chinese herbs like a Buddha fruit or Lor Hon Kor (good for phlegm and lungs), dried cane strips, and some cooling dried herbs….I decided to combine them with the Misai Kucing.

After 4 hours of simmering over a small fire, I added in 2 cups of red sugar or dark sugar … this type of sugar has anti-inflammatory properties

The rest of the drink are stored in jugs in the fridge and we drink this over 2 days…a nice, refreshing drink for the hot days here in KL. I now have 6 pots of Cat’s Whiskers plants in my garden, so that they can be harvested every two weeks for making my family’s pot of health drinks for health maintenance. It is definitely cheaper than buying those teabags!

So, I would advise you to buy a small pot of Misai Kucing and plant it in your garden or in your apartment’s balcony, i f you have some space. They grow easily in pots and need minimum care – water daily, direct or indirect sunlight, and bi-monthly fertilising. If I can plant them, you can, too! My present batch of Cats’s Whiskers plants are offshoots of the original one- foot tall plant that I bought about 4 years ago.

I wish you good health always!

Chinese “Lemon” Leaves Drink For Lung Cleansing, Detoxification & Coughs

A bunch of “lemon” leaves, compared to a teaspoon for measure

A cup of healthy “lemon” leaves drink

Good morning, dear friends :D

When I was a kid, my mom used to brew this drink and make everyone have a glass of it. Being young at that time, I never asked what exactly the drink does for health as my mom just said it was good for me.  We had these plants in a little pot as they grew easily with minimal care.

It was about 30 years later when a few weeks ago, my massage/healer friend gave me some of this to drink and it brought back fond memories of my childhood health drinks. I just collected the stems discarded by my friend and poked them into some soil in a pot behind my house. They grew very fast and in 2months’ time, I had enough of my very own “lemon” plants for harvesting.

I am sure these are not the leaves from the actual lemon fruit tree but its name in the Cantonese dialect is “Leng Mong Yip” or “Lemon Leaves”, literally. When you crush the leaves, there is a minty and lemony smell…hence, its name. The taste is quite refreshing and not at all difficult to drink.  I think I will add in the word “Chinese” to differentiate these leaves from the actual lemon tree leaves.

The health benefits of these lemon leaves are -

1) to cleanse our lungs of toxins, i.e. it is a detoxifying drink. In Cantonese, it helps to “ching fai” or in English, “clear the lungs.”

2) this drink is a remedy for coughs, both phlegmy and dry coughs.

However, please note that this drink heaty or “yang” energy in nature and if we have an accompanying sore throat with a cough, it is best not to take it. I decided to brew this drink with some honey dates (which are “yin” in nature) to balance out and make this drink “safer” to consume.

For me,  I like to make health drinks or cook some nutritious soups for my family as a preventive measure for health maintenance, so that the frequency of any of us falling ill is much reduced. So, last week, I made a small pot of lemon leaves drink and everyone got a cup of it to drink. For my husband who is a heavy smoker, I made him drink 2 cups.

Chinese “Lemon” Leaves Drink

Method -

1) Have enough lemon leaves and stems (cleaned) to fill up 2/3s of a medium pot.

2) Fill up half the pot with water.

3) Add in 8 large honey dates or “mutt joe”.

4) Cover pot and bring to a boil.

5) Reduce heat to small and simmer for 1 1/2 hours.

6) Refrigerate any leftover drink for consumption the next day.

Consumption -

1) Drink one cup per person per day for health maintenance purposes.

2) For someone who is having a cough, drink 2 cups daily of this for 2 to 3 days.

Here’s to good health always! Cheers!
